Let’s be honest - most people don’t love being in front of the camera. If you’ve ever thought, I never know what to do with my hands or I always look awkward in photos, you’re definitely not alone. But the truth is, looking natural and feeling comfortable in photos isn’t actually about being naturally photogenic - it’s about knowing a few key tricks to help you relax.
As a brand photographer, I’ve worked with countless business owners who started a session feeling nervous but ended up loving their photos. So, what’s the secret?
1. Shift the Focus Away from Yourself
A lot of camera anxiety comes from overthinking how you look. Instead of focusing on yourself, think about why you’re having the photos taken. Maybe you’re showing up for your business, telling your brand story, or creating something that connects with your audience. When you shift the focus to your purpose, it takes the pressure off.
2. Choose a Photographer You Trust
Feeling at ease in front of the camera isn’t just on you - the right photographer plays a massive role. A great photographer does more than just press the shutter; they create an environment where you can relax and feel like yourself. Here’s how:
- They keep the mood light. A photographer who chats with you, makes you laugh, or gives little words of encouragement throughout the session helps ease nerves.
- They give clear direction. Instead of leaving you wondering What do I do with my hands?, a good photographer gently guides you into poses that feel natural, rather than forced.
- They pay attention to the details. A great photographer will notice if your hair needs adjusting or if your posture could be more flattering, so you don’t have to worry about it.
- They create a no-pressure vibe. The best photographers don’t rush the session or make you feel like you have to “perform.” Instead, they help you settle in, try different things, and remind you that you can’t get it wrong.
If you’ve ever felt awkward in photos before, chances are, the photographer didn’t help you feel comfortable. It’s not you—it’s the approach!
3. Keep Moving
Stiff poses = awkward photos. One of my favourite tricks is to keep my clients moving - walking, playing with their hair, adjusting a sleeve, or even laughing. These little movements make the photos feel dynamic and natural. (Pro tip: Putting your hands in your pockets is a great way to instantly look relaxed!)
4. Don’t Overthink Your Expression
Most people worry about their smile - Does it look forced? Am I smiling too much? The best way to get a natural expression is to think about something that makes you happy rather than forcing a smile. If you’re struggling, I might ask you to take a deep breath, look away, and then turn back to the camera—that moment of transition is when the magic happens.
5. Dress for Confidence
When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. Choose outfits that make you feel like you - whether that’s a blazer and jeans or something flowy and comfortable. Avoid anything too tight or something you have to keep adjusting.
6. Remember, It’s Just a Conversation
Instead of thinking of a photoshoot as a performance, think of it as a conversation between you and the camera. When I photograph clients, I guide them through the session with little prompts, so they never feel stuck or unsure.
